Aroha Taveuni Beachfront Bures construction began in 2008, built from scratch on vacant land with personal project management by the owners Denis and Ngaire Irwin.

Business commenced in 2010 with 2 guest bures, garage and workshed and temporary owners accommodation.

Additional phases of development added the current owners accommodation, restaurant and bar and other outbuildings and facilities.

Modern and solid building techniques are coupled with traditional Fijian style and personal touches from New Zealand to realise a resort that sits favourably in its natural surroundings.

All construction exceeds current Fiji building regulations and can be locked down (stormproofed) in the event of threatening weather. The property has experienced 2 Category 5 cyclones with minimal or no damage when much of the island suffered great destruction.

Property Details

Owners Bure

The owners bure is a spacious 2 bedroom 2 bathroom accommodation, including tropical style outdoor shower area, indoor shower areas, plus office and laundry/utility rooms, all fully furnished with a combination of quality hardwood floors and stone tile.

The main living area is an open plan design with fitted kitchen, breakfast bar and lounge leading out via folding doors to ocean view decking, 10 metre infinity swimming pool, manicured lawn area with tropical plants and trees. A few more short steps takes you directly to the beach looking out to the Somosomo Strait.

With accommodation like this you may feel you’re on holiday every day.

The owners bure is conveniently set between the “Kai Time” bar and restaurant and the guest bures.

Dennis and Ngaire have done an amazing job of making their vision a reality with this intimate resort. The accommodations are top notch, their staff are amazing, the location is perfect.

Family Guest Bure

The family guest bure consists of a master bedroom with King Size bed, bathroom and outdoor shower, with an adjoining bedroom with 3 single beds, bathroom with indoor shower. 2 single beds can be converted to a King Size double bed when required.

Both rooms are tastefully decorated with artwork and local artifacts, furnished with desk and storage areas and bedside units. Both rooms also have air conditioning plus fans for cooling and louvered windows for tropical breezes to flow and listen to the lapping of waves upon the shore.

The exterior covered deck houses a kitchenette with fridge-freezer, microwave, and kitchenware to prepare snacks or light meals, plus glass-topped tables and chairs.

A few steps further out are shade umbrellas and comfortable loungers to take in the view of the gardens, ocean, sunsets, local fishermen and other boats passing by along the Somosomo Strait.

We just spent 5 nights at Aroha and everything was just perfect. You can see that every thing has been thought wisely. Materials used to build the place are quality one’s and build by professionals. Service is great, the chef and team prepare every day, great food.

Standard Guest Bure

The 3 Standard guest bures are identical in size and layout and furnished in the same style as the family bure, and with the same amenities, eg air conditioning, kitchenette and tropical style outdoor showers to complement the interior bathroom areas.

Each accommodation has it’s own unobstructed view to the front of the grounds, beach and ocean with plenty of space for lounging and sunbathing.

They have created something really special, the bure’s are fantastic. I HIGHLY recommend anyone to stay here. We couldn’t fault one thing from our stay and we were definitely sad to leave. Faultless – Book it.

Bar Restaurant and Social Areas

Resort guests and members of the public are fed and watered in the “Kai Time” bar and restaurant area. The interior area comprises commercial kitchen, bathrooms, dining area, service bar, a wood-fired pizza oven, and seats up to 30 guests for formal dining.

Outside is additional seating for formal dining plus bar stool and bar table style social area for those that prefer a less formal al-fresco atmosphere with lawn grass, coconut trees, tropicals plants and flowers, ocean views and spectacular sunsets throughout the year.

The bar and restaurant is very popular with a diverse range of locals, many of whom will become your friends.

All timber furniture was constructed onsite from quality Fijian hardwoods by Denis Irwin – you won’t find anything better locally !

Rarely do you walk into a place and it looks exactly like the website. Well, this one does and then some! Very boutique and intimate feeling given the small size with a handful of units – sitting on a stunning block of beach front surrounded by superb gardens. The units are impeccable – well designed, comfortably furnished and with an outdoor shower that is a real treat! Outstanding hospitality – excellent value – great experience!

Garage, Workshop and Laundry

The resort work areas lie at the far (southern) end of the property, constructed with the same quality and style as the public, guest and owners buildings.

The large garage/workshop offers plenty of space for carpentry projects, repairs, tools and equipment storage, spare parts plus washing machines for resort laundry.

More than 100 feet of covered laundry lines allow for natural air-drying and reduced power consumption.

We are a couple from Germany fulfilling our dream – a trip around the world. As you can imagine, we are staying in many different places and tripadvisor.com has become our best and most reliable friend during our travels. Other Outbuildings

Massage Bure

A private bure in traditional Fijian style for massage and spa treatments lies between the owners accommodation and the Kai Time bar and restaurant.

Chill Room and Timber Storage Shed

The Chill room is a converted sea container located behind the bar and restaurant for easy access to food and beverage supplies, with chest freezers and shelving for dry goods, tins, jars etc.

Adjacent to the chill room is a storage area for timber to fuel the wood-fired pizza oven located just inside the restaurant area.

This is truly an intimate resort literally created by Ngaire and Dennis. We watched the incredible love and very diligent painstaking, detailed human effort in bringing this taste of Fiji to us all…. Indeed the spot to stay. Look no further, and not a better venue to renew your spirit.

Parking and Road Frontage

The resort guest and staff car park is located at the southern end of the property with sufficient space for 6-8 vehicles.

The “Kai Time” restaurant car park lies at the northern end and can accommodate 8-10 vehicles.

Both are laid with natural coral.

Aroha Taveuni Beachfront Bures lies on a stretch of the Southern Coastal Road between Wairiki and Waiyevo. There are two entrances to the property from the tar sealed road – one for resort guests at the Wairiki end, and one for the Kai Time Restaurant and Bar guests on the Waiyevo side. Both entrances are appropriately signposted.

Local Amenities

Grocery Stores

The closest general grocery stores are Sun City, and Meridian Store in Wairiki, both walkable in a couple of minutes, or 30 seconds by car !

Larger grocery stores (Fairprice, Max-Valu) are located in Naqara town, a few minutes (4km) by car.

Hardware

Meridian Store also has a wide range of hardware supplies to meet most common DIY or maintenance needs. Vinod Patel, a nationwide hardware store is located in Naqara town.

Post Office

A post office with a range of stationery supplies and rentable PO Boxes is located on the Coastal Road in Waiyevo.

Bottle Shop

The First Light Bottle Shop is next door to the post office in Waiyevo. They also provide some frozen and chilled meat and cheese products.

Fuel Station

A little further along the Coastal road through Waiyevo and just past Garden Island Resort is the Total Fuel station, the main fuel station on the island. Smaller fuel outlets are dotted around the island – you may have to ask to find some of them.

Police Station and Courthouse

The main police station and courthouse are located up the hill in Waiyevo. Smaller community police posts are dotted around the island.

Hospital, Medical and |Dental Services

From the Coastal Road in Waiyevo head up the hill to the Taveuni Island hospital. A dentist and the Health Inspector are also located within the hospital grounds.

Private medical doctors and visiting hospital clinics also operate on the island, and serve smaller neighbouring islands.

Visiting charitable organisations visit the island annually to perform a range of specialist and general medical, surgical and dental treatments not normally available. Services are provided free of charge but donations are always welcome!

Fire Station

The main fire station is also in Waiyevo close to the hospital and police station.

District Officer

The District Officer building is just past the police station, and deals with a range government and legal administrations, eg business licences, permits, issuance of birth and marriage certificates.

Naqara Town

Naqara Town is the largest commercial area on the island featuring a colourful array of shops, mechanics, hardware stores, second hand bargain stores and market stalls where the local ladies sell fresh and generally organic produce.

The largest general grocery and supplies stores are Fairprice in central Naqara, and Max-Valu about a kilometer further through Somosomo village.

Getting Here by Air or Sea

Once you have made it to Fiji you can get to Taveuni by either air or water. The island is serviced by regular flights and ferries departing from Viti Levu each week.

Flights are provided by Fiji Link (the domestic arm of Fiji Airways) and Northern Air departing Nadi and Suva, and arriving at Matei airport at the northern end of the island. There are usually three or four flight arrivals each day.

Ferry services are provided by Goundar shipping, departing Suva twice a week arriving at the main ferry wharf a stones throw from Aroha Taveuni. The trip by ferry takes around 20 hours via Savusavu, so bring a book !
